Since its initial development in the 1860's the 'Battery', which we take for granted, has been continuously refined and developed, and become a common household object.

Addendum
There are other minor battery systems to be found in the common cylindrical sizes and within a 1.2-1.6 volt operating range.
Types worth a brief mention are: Lithium Iron disulphide, which will out perform but is more expensive than alkaline. It has raised some concerns as it is has a high initial voltage which could possibly affect some appliances.
Mercuric oxide cells can still be found. They have high energy density at a voltage of 1.35 but the high toxic mercury content has seen them prohibited in many countries.
